Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)
Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) Defined

Bone mineral densitometry, also frequently called a DEXA or bone mineral density exam, is an important procedure in the evaluation of bone health. The technology uses a dedicated machine designed specifically for this purpose. It is a quick, simple and painless exam that uses x-rays and highly sophisticated software to measure bone loss.

BMD is our best defense in the early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Often called the silent disease, osteoporosis robs the body of bone strength, leaving many at risk for broken bones with even a simple fall or bump. Post menopausal women are at highest risk but both men and women lose bone strength as they age. In recent years, the emergence of many new pharmaceutical options has greatly enhanced the treatment of osteoporosis. With these new treatment options available, diagnosing bone loss early can have a significant impact on quality of life for osteoporosis patients.

Bone Mineral Densitometry at EPIC

EPIC Imaging's bone mineral densitometry equipment provides the most comprehensive analysis and screening of bone loss available today. The technical term for this technology is "dual energy x-ray absorptiometry" or DEXA. This sophisticated equipment is routinely inspected by a physicist and calibrated to meet or exceed designated standards. EPIC employs only licensed technologists specifically trained in the science of bone density scanning to perform your procedure.

If you are currently scheduled for a bone mineral scan at EPIC, our DEXA Scan exam preparations will help you prepare for the day of your test.

How Bone Density Scans Work

DEXA bone density scans make use of a specialized x-ray technology to obtain focused images of the hip and lower spine. This is the area where osteoporotic fractures occur most often. The x-ray beam itself is made up of two distinct energy levels that are absorbed differently by the bones. These images are sent directly to a computer that analyzes the differences and calculates the amount of bone mineral present. Using sophisticated computer software, this information is then compared to national measurement standards and a profile is generated detailing the level of bone loss and potential risk for bone fractures.

How We Use It

At EPIC Imaging bone density scans are used as a fast and effective way of evaluating overall bone health; determining your risk of fractures; diagnosing osteoporosis; diagnosing osteopenia, the precursor of osteoporosis; and determining the effect of long term medication use on bone health. Your risk of fracture is measured as a score that compares your bone strength with the national normal range for bone mass.

Determining Your Risk

Evaluation of bone loss requires a thorough review of the factors that often contribute to the disease of osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation website, www.nof.org, is an important resource for anyone wanting to learn more about this disease. You may also want to test where you score on some common risk factors.
